Sean M. Donovan is a Howard R. Marsh Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Communication and Media at the University of Michigan's College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA). His research focuses on LGBTQ media cultures, affect theory, film festivals, and reality television. He holds a PhD in Film, Television & Media from the University of Michigan, an MA in Literature from American University, and a BA in Literature with a concentration in Cinema Studies from American University.
Donovan’s work interrogates the cultural work of gender and sexuality systems through media analysis. His publications explore topics such as LGBTQ film festivals, RuPaul’s Drag Race fandom, and the intersection of animal studies with camp theory. He serves as curator of LGBTQ experimental cinema for the Ann Arbor Film Festival and collaborates with Dr. Hollis Griffin on research about television and gentrification in New York City.
His research has appeared in journals like The New Review of Film and Television Studies, Jump-Cut, and Somatechnics, alongside public-facing outlets like Pride Source. Donovan’s writing bridges academic rigor with accessible cultural critique, emphasizing queer temporalities and media’s affective networks.
