Brian L. Donovan serves as Professor of Sociology and Associate Chairperson in the Department of Sociology at the University of Kansas. His academic work centers on gender dynamics within American cultural frameworks, with significant contributions to understanding societal narratives through historical and legal lenses.
Donovan's research spans gender and sexuality studies, cultural sociology, and the sociology of law, with recent focus on fandom phenomena. His current project Swifties: Anatomy of a Fandom analyzes collective joy in fan communities through in-depth interviews, building on his prior book American Gold Digger: Marriage, Money, and Law from the Ziegfeld Follies to Anna Nicole Smith which deconstructed the 'gold digger' trope in legal and cultural contexts. His scholarship appears in Celebrity Studies, Theory and Society, and The Sociological Quarterly.
His distinguished teaching contributions have been recognized with:
