Dr. Scott Yates is an Associate Professor in the School of Applied Social Sciences at De Montfort University (DMU), within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. He holds a PhD in Psychology (2002) and a BSc (1997). His research focuses on mental health, family dynamics in parental mental illness, disability studies, and qualitative methodologies. Key areas include stigma reduction, family communication, and interventions for vulnerable populations. He has collaborated with organizations like the Prato Group and contributed to policy briefs and clinical guidelines.
Research highlights include studies on mental health stigma among youth, familial impacts of parental mental illness, and healthcare inequities for sickle cell disease patients. He has published widely in journals such as Frontiers in Public Health, Social Science & Medicine, and British Journal of Social Work. His work has earned awards, including the JRN Veronica Bishop Paper of the Year (2019–2020).
Teaching spans research methods, mental health, and health and wellbeing. He advises multiple grants, including initiatives on anti-stigma resources and school-based mental health support. Collaborations with international agencies and academic institutions underscore his commitment to global health equity.
