Scott T. Eblen is an Associate Professor in the Department of Cell and Molecular Pharmacology at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) College of Medicine. He serves as Course Director for Dental Pharmacology at the MUSC College of Dental Medicine and is an active member of the Gyn/Onc and Breast Cancer research teams at the Hollings Cancer Center. His research focuses on signal transduction mechanisms in ovarian and breast cancer, with emphasis on acquired drug resistance and pharmacology education.
Dr. Eblen earned his BS from the University of Kentucky (1988), PhD from Vanderbilt University (1995), and completed postdoctoral training at the University of Virginia (2002). His educational journey reflects a strong foundation in molecular and cellular biology that underpins his current research.
His laboratory investigates protein kinases and ubiquitin ligases in cancer signaling pathways, particularly ERK-mediated regulation in ovarian cancer and HUNK kinase in breast cancer metastasis. Key discoveries include identifying RBM17/SPF45 as the first splicing factor regulated by multiple MAP kinase cascades and demonstrating UBR5/EDD as an ERK2 substrate that enhances cisplatin resistance. Current work explores kinase-mediated mechanisms of drug resistance and cardio-oncology side effects from VEGF inhibitors.
Analysis of Dr. Eblen's publication record (2013-2025) reveals consistent focus on ovarian/breast cancer signaling, with recent expansion into therapeutic targeting of kinase pathways and mitigation of cancer treatment side effects. His 2024 work on VEGF inhibitor-induced hypertension demonstrates translational impact through phosphoproteomic screening and canine clinical trials.
Dr. Eblen's research program is supported by multiple National Cancer Institute grants, Department of Defense Breast and Ovarian Cancer Research Programs, and institutional funding from MUSC Center for Oral Health and South Carolina Translational Research Institute. He actively mentors through his teaching roles in dental and medical pharmacology curricula.
As leader of a research laboratory within the Hollings Cancer Center, Dr. Eblen collaborates with Gyn/Onc and Breast Cancer teams to investigate kinase signaling networks, develop novel substrates identification methods, and translate findings into potential therapeutic strategies for overcoming drug resistance in gynecological cancers.
