Scott Strong is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at the Colorado School of Mines. He holds a B.S. (2001), M.S. (2006), and Ph.D. (2018) in relevant fields from the same institution. His research focuses on mathematical physics, vortex dynamics in quantum fluids, nonlinear partial differential equations, and educational assessment. He has received multiple teaching awards, including the Mines Alumni Teaching Award (2013) and the Graduating Senior Outstanding Professor in Mathematics Award (2008, 2009, 2014).
His educational background includes degrees in Mathematical and Computer Sciences (B.S.), Applied and Computational Mathematics (M.S.), and Applied Physics (Ph.D.). Research interests emphasize vortex-dominated flows in quantum fluids, geometric approaches to vortex filament dynamics, and the application of nonlinear PDEs to superfluid turbulence. He also contributes to educational research, particularly in assessing core mathematics courses and undergraduate research program efficacy.
Publications span theoretical physics (e.g., vortex dynamics in Bose-Einstein condensates) and education-focused works (e.g., evaluating renewable energy REU programs). His recent work explores geometric quantum hydrodynamics and the mathematical modeling of mountain pine beetle population dynamics. He has been actively involved in Mines’ academic community through roles like Faculty in CASA (2012–2014) and delivering the 2013 Convocation Faculty Address.
