Scott Shane serves as the A. Malachi Mixon, III Chair in Entrepreneurial Studies and Professor of Economics at Case Western Reserve University's Weatherhead School of Management since his 2003 appointment. Previously held faculty positions at the University of Maryland, MIT, and Georgia Institute of Technology.
His educational background includes a PhD (1992) and MS (1991) from the University of Pennsylvania, MS from Georgetown University (1988), and AB from Brown University (1986).
Shane's research focuses on how entrepreneurs discover opportunities, assemble resources, and design organizations, with additional expertise in university spin-offs, business franchising, angel investing, and genetic factors in entrepreneurship. His work bridges management science, economics, and behavioral psychology to examine entrepreneurial processes.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals consistent focus on entrepreneurship (57.14%), with growing intersections into mathematical fields including pure mathematics (42.86%) and field theory applications. His 2013-2020 work particularly examines genetic predispositions in business creation and neuroscience applications.

Shane serves as Managing Director of the Comeback Capital Fund investing in Heartland startups, and previously served on JumpStart Inc (2008-2009) and NorthCoast Angel Fund (2006-2018). His Weatherhead School teaching focuses on Entrepreneurial Finance and Entrepreneurship and Wealth Creation, for which he received teaching excellence nominations.
He directs research projects in technology entrepreneurship, new firm formation, economic development, and new venture finance while maintaining active consulting relationships with organizations worldwide.
