Scott Pinkney is a Professor of Lighting Design and Head of the Design/Technology Area at Emerson College, where he has taught since 2004 after initially serving as a Visiting Professor and Guest Artist starting in 1992. With a career spanning nearly 50 years, he has designed lighting for over 500 theatrical productions across Broadway, Off-Broadway, regional, and international venues.
His educational background includes:
- B.F.A. from Boston University
- M.A. from Emerson College
Mr. Pinkney specializes in Lighting Design for theatre, opera, ballet, and non-traditional venues, with expertise extending to Event Design and The Business of Design. His work bridges technical execution and creative artistry across diverse performance genres from classical Shakespeare to contemporary musicals and industrial events.
His professional recognition includes:

As an educator, he mentors design students and leads the Design/Technology Area at Emerson College while serving as Vice President of the Board of Trustees for The College Light Opera Company on Cape Cod. His industrial design firm Pinkney Associates, LLC serves major corporate clients including IBM, Estée Lauder, and The Smithsonian Institution.
