Brian J. Lilienthal is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies at Tufts University, located within the School of Arts and Sciences. He holds a MFA from California Institute of the Arts and a BFA from Emerson College. His academic roles include teaching courses like Advanced Lighting Design, Lighting Design, and Special Topics in Automated Lighting Design.
With over 200 theatrical productions designed nationwide, Lilienthal's professional work spans prestigious venues including Trinity Repertory Company, Merrimack Repertory Theatre, and the Humana Festival of New American Plays at the Actors Theatre of Louisville. His design expertise focuses on lighting and stagecraft, with particular emphasis on modern and classical theatre productions.
Notable accolades include the L.A. Ovation Award (2006) for Ken Roht's Echo's Hammer and multiple IRNE nominations. He has also served as a Resident Lighting Designer at the National Playwrights’ Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center (2006–2019).
At Tufts, Lilienthal’s teaching emphasizes practical production skills, including design techniques and automated lighting systems. He has led courses such as Practicum in Design and Computer-Assisted Drafting, fostering student engagement in hands-on theatre production.
His professional activities include committee roles in Tufts’ Design and Production Committee and TDPS Season Selection. He continues to contribute to both academic and professional theatre communities through teaching, design, and mentorship.
