Scott Phillips is a Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Denver, affiliated with the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. His research focuses on capital punishment, conflict management, and socio-legal studies, combining empirical analysis of death penalty disparities with theoretical work on Donald Black's conflict theories. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Georgia (2000), and has held academic roles since 2000 including Department Chair (2010-2014) and Director of Socio-Legal Studies (2011-2014).
Key research interests include racial and geographic disparities in capital punishment, the social geometry of legal punishment, and the intersection of law and conflict resolution. His 2022 book Geometrical Justice: The Death Penalty in America synthesizes these themes. Teaching includes courses on capital punishment, wrongful convictions, and criminological theory.
Publications span over two decades, analyzing Texas and Colorado death penalty systems, media influences on legal outcomes, and the role of social status in punishment perceptions. His work frequently critiques systemic inequities in criminal justice systems, with recent focus on victim demographics as predictors of execution likelihood.
