Jason Carmichael is a Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Sociology at McGill University. His research focuses on criminology, criminal justice, social control, and climate change. He holds a PhD from The Ohio State University (2006) and has been at McGill since 2006. His work explores sociopolitical influences on criminal justice legislation and formal social control mechanisms, including police behavior, death penalty policies, and wrongful conviction legislation. A second research stream examines environmental movements, media influence on climate change perceptions, and partisan divides in climate concern.
He has led research projects funded by SSHRC and FRQSC, including studies on police behavior and public perceptions of legitimacy. Courses taught include the Sociology of Law, Criminology, and Quantitative Analysis. His publications span journals like American Sociological Review and Environmental Politics, with a focus on interdisciplinary analyses of social control, punishment, and environmental advocacy.
Recent work includes the STOPMTL.ca initiative, analyzing police behavior and public interactions. Grants include SSHRC funding (2019-2021) and a FRQSC grant (2011-2014) examining police violence in Canada. Advising focuses on graduate students in criminology and environmental sociology, with notable collaborations with scholars like Robert Brulle and Stephanie Kent.
