Dr Scott Kerpen is a Lecturer and Course Leader for Sociology at Bath Spa University, affiliated with the School of Sciences. He holds a PhD, MSc in Social Science Research Methods, and BA in Journalism, Media, and Sociology, all from Cardiff University.

Scott’s research focuses on digital empowerment and activism for marginalized groups, particularly LGBTQIA+ youth. His work explores how digital media both enable and displace opportunities for belonging, community building, and identity work, while addressing challenges related to class, race, and gender. He contributes to digital and participatory research methods, employing biographical relational map interviews and researcher-solicited social media groups.
His recent publications examine digital empowerment in the context of gender and sexuality (2019) and inclusive sex education responding to youth online practices (2024). Themes include political polarization, digital communication, and qualitative methodologies.
