Scott Essman serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Department of General Education at Pacific Oaks College in Pasadena, California. With a rich background in media and film production, he brings extensive industry experience to his academic role.
Mr. Essman's educational background includes:

As the Creative Director of Visionary Media, a multimedia organization first created in New York in 1988 and reformed in Los Angeles in 1995, Mr. Essman has developed expertise across multiple facets of media production. His teaching focuses on mass media, filmmaking, screenwriting, directing, and digital video editing. His professional work centers on motion picture craftsmanship and Hollywood history, with special emphasis on documentary production, film preservation, and celebrating behind-the-scenes contributors to the film industry.
Throughout his career, Mr. Essman has created numerous tribute programs honoring significant figures in Hollywood history, including Dick Smith (the greatest living makeup artist of his time), John Chambers and Planet of the Apes, The Wizard of Oz, Jack Pierce (Universal Pictures' monster maker), silent film star Lon Chaney, and the Westmores of Hollywood. His work extends to DVD documentaries and video interviews for Universal Studios Home Entertainment, including featurettes for Van Helsing, Dawn of the Dead, and The Chronicles of Riddick. He has also published seven issues of Directed By Magazine highlighting feature film directors and their craft.
Mr. Essman has received recognition for his contributions to film scholarship:
- Rondo Award for Best Feature Film Commentary (2008) for work on Universal Studios Home Entertainment's The Mummy (1932 version)
- Award of merit at the Best Shorts Competition for his short film Trane and Miles
- Audience choice award at the 909 Film Festival for Trane and Miles
As an educator, Mr. Essman has taught at multiple institutions including the University of La Verne, The Art Institute of California, California Polytechnic State University, Pomona, Santiago Canyon College, and Bradley University for their 'Hollywood Semester.' He has published over 1200 articles about behind-the-scenes film professionals for outlets including American Cinema Editors, Below the Line News, MovieMaker, Cinefex, Variety, and The Los Angeles Times. He has directed several short films including Ten Men on the Field, Potluck, and Trane and Miles. Currently, he is planning his first feature film while continuing his academic work at Pacific Oaks College.
