Scott Blumenthal is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Oregon, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on the ecology and evolution of early hominins in Africa, integrating paleoanthropology, paleoecology, and geochemistry. Dr. Blumenthal holds a Ph.D. from the City University of New York (2015) and a B.A. from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (2008).
His research investigates hominin diets and environments through stable isotope analysis of fossil teeth, fieldwork in East Africa, and lab-based analyses. Current projects include studying diet seasonality in fossil hominins and papionins, eastern African paleoenvironments, and the ecology of extant primates. His work is funded by the NSF, UK-based organizations, and the Leakey Foundation.
Key research themes include:
- Paleoenvironmental reconstruction using isotopic proxies
- Hominin dietary adaptation and niche expansion
- Interdisciplinary methods bridging lab, field, and museum studies
His lab (Condon Hall 369) supports ongoing studies of fossil mammals and modern ecological analogs. Blumenthal has published in high-impact journals like Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences and Journal of Human Evolution.
