Chris Robinson is a Professor in the Ph.D. Program in Anthropology at the City University of New York Graduate Center and serves as Chairperson of the Biological Sciences department at Bronx Community College. He also works as a consultant for the Wenner-Gren Foundation, contributing his expertise in paleoanthropology and evolutionary biology to one of the field's premier funding organizations.
Dr. Robinson earned his PhD from New York University in 2003, establishing the foundation for his career in anthropological research. His educational background prepared him for advanced work in morphometric analysis and evolutionary studies that would become central to his research program.
Robinson's research primarily focuses on using three-dimensional geometric morphometrics to explore shape differences in the mandible, teeth, and cranium of fossil hominins and extant hominoids. His work spans from analyzing Australopithecus specimens to studying European Early Pleistocene paleoecology. A significant portion of his research investigates mandibular variation across hominoid species, with particular attention to evolutionary implications. He has also made important contributions to understanding giraffe evolution and its implications for paleoenvironmental reconstructions.
His publication record reveals a strong emphasis on methodological rigor in morphometric analysis, with numerous papers addressing technical challenges in data collection and interpretation. The articles demonstrate consistent focus on mandibular morphology across hominins and hominoids, with increasing sophistication in analytical approaches over time. His work bridges traditional paleoanthropology with cutting-edge quantitative methods, contributing significantly to our understanding of hominin evolution and adaptation.
As a principal investigator, Robinson has secured funding from major sources including the National Science Foundation (BCS-1636686) and The Leakey Foundation. His collaborative work extends internationally, particularly with Romanian colleagues studying Early Pleistocene sites in the Olteţ River Valley. These projects involve interdisciplinary teams analyzing micro- and mesowear, stable isotopes, ecomorphology, and taphonomy to reconstruct paleoenvironments during critical periods of hominin evolution.
Robinson contributes to field research through active participation in excavations and fossil analysis at important paleontological sites. His work in Romania represents a significant ongoing commitment to understanding Eastern European paleoenvironments during the period when early hominins were first dispersing out of Africa. This research has expanded our knowledge of mammalian species distributions and paleoecological conditions in this crucial region.
