Melania Ioannidou serves as a Postdoctoral Researcher and Scientific Coordinator for the ERC-funded project 'FIRSTSTEPS' (2022-2025) within the Palaeoanthropology working group of the Department of Geosciences, Faculty of Science at the University of Tübingen.
Her academic foundation includes a Ph.D. in Archaeological Sciences and Human Evolution (2016-2021) and an M.Sc. in Scientific Archaeology with Paleoanthropology specialization (2013-2016), both from the University of Tübingen, and a B.Sc. in Geology from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (2009-2013). Her doctoral dissertation reevaluated Ouranopithecus macedoniensis using virtual anthropology and geometric morphometrics under supervisors Prof. Katerina Harvati and Prof. George Koufos.
Dr. Ioannidou specializes in applying 3D geometric morphometric techniques to Miocene hominoid fossils, with particular focus on cranial and mandibular analysis of Ouranopithecus macedoniensis. Her research bridges paleontology, virtual reconstruction methodologies, and evolutionary biology to investigate primate adaptation and hominoid phylogeny during the Miocene epoch.
Her publication record demonstrates consistent methodological innovation in virtual anthropology, with recent work emphasizing quantitative morphometric approaches to resolve taxonomic uncertainties in fossil hominoids. These studies contribute significantly to understanding primate evolutionary trajectories in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
