Prof. Darryl De Ruiter is a biological anthropologist and Department Head of Anthropology at Texas A&M University. He holds the Cornerstone Faculty Fellowship in Liberal Arts and has been recognized with the 2016 Distinguished Achievement Award in Research. His research focuses on the ecology and evolution of early hominins in Africa, particularly the discovery of Australopithecus sediba (2010) and Homo naledi (2015). These discoveries revealed significant insights into the transition to the genus Homo and complex hominin behavior such as deliberate body disposal.
Dr. De Ruiter earned his PhD in Anatomical Sciences from the University of the Witwatersrand (2001). He has held tenured positions since 2009 and advanced to Full Professor in 2013. His teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses including Anthropology of Beer, Australopithecine Paleoecology, and Zooarchaeology.
Research Interests:
- Paleoanthropology: Fossil hominin morphology and evolution
- Paleoecology: Reconstructing ancient environments using faunal and isotopic data
- Isotope ecology: Strontium and carbon isotope studies of hominin diets and mobility
- Taphonomy: Analyzing fossil accumulation processes in cave systems
Key Projects:
- Ongoing analysis of Homo naledi fossils from Rising Star Cave, focusing on craniodental morphology and cultural behavior
- Strontium isotope studies of South African hominins to trace geographic origins and mobility patterns
- Investigating the paleoenvironmental context of Malapa and Cooper’s Cave sites
Grants & Fellowships:
- Ray A. Rothrock ’77 Fellowship (2009)
- Cornerstone Faculty Fellowship (2014)
- NSF Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant (2016)
His lab conducts interdisciplinary research involving fossil morphology, isotopic analysis, and taphonomic studies. Current advisees include Kersten Bergstrom (PhD candidate) and Nompumelelo Hlophe (MA student). Collaborative projects with international teams advance understanding of hominin diversity and adaptation in Africa.
