Scott Barrett

Scott Barrett is the Lenfest-Earth Institute Professor of Natural Resource Economics at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). He specializes in transnational challenges such as climate change, disease eradication, and ocean governance, focusing on institutional frameworks for international cooperation. Barrett is affiliated with the Center for Environmental Economics and Policy (CEEP) and the Ph.D. in Sustainable Development program.

Previously, he taught at Johns Hopkins University and London Business School, and held visiting roles at institutions including Yale and Princeton. He has advised major international bodies like the UN, World Bank, and IPCC, and served as a lead author for the IPCC. His research explores how treaties, customary law, and other institutions can address global public goods challenges.

Barrett’s work bridges economics, environmental science, and policy, emphasizing solutions to planetary-scale governance problems. His affiliations include research fellowships at the Beijer Institute, CESifo, and the Kiel Institute of World Economics.
