Scott Altman is the Virginia S. and Fred H. Bice Professor of Law at the USC Gould School of Law. He has been a faculty member since 1988, serving as Associate Dean (1995–2006) and Vice Dean (2007–2016). His expertise spans jurisprudence, property law, and family law, with a focus on child custody, divorce, and legal theory.
Altman earned a BA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and a JD, cum laude, from Harvard Law School, where he served on the Harvard Law Review. He clerked for Judge Dorothy Nelson of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals before joining USC. His endowed chair, awarded in 1997, reflects his scholarly impact.
His research explores child custody norms, judicial candor, and legal ethics, with notable works like *A Theory of Child Support* (2003) and *Divorcing Threats and Offers* (1996). Recent interests include parental rights, intimacy in law, and political expression in employment contexts.
Altman teaches courses in Family Law, Property, Jurisprudence, and Community Property. His awards include the Bice Professorship, recognizing his contributions to legal scholarship and education.
