Dr. Sayeh Bayat is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Geomatics Engineering at the University of Calgary’s Schulich School of Engineering. She is also a Full Member of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and the O’Brien Institute for Public Health. Her research integrates machine learning, geographic information science, and biomedical engineering to develop solutions for healthcare challenges, particularly in dementia detection and healthy aging. Dr. Bayat directs the Healthy City Laboratory (HCL), focusing on mobility behaviors and their relationship with cognitive health.
Dr. Bayat holds a BASc in Engineering Science (2016) and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering (2021), both from the University of Toronto. Her doctoral work explored GPS mobility as a biomarker for dementia. She teaches courses such as ENGO333 (Programming for Engineering) and BMEN619 (Digital Health).
Her research interests include biomedical data science, digital health monitoring, and the application of geospatial technologies to health challenges. Notable projects involve analyzing driving behaviors to detect preclinical Alzheimer’s and developing equity-focused urban healthcare strategies using GIS.
Dr. Bayat has received the 2023 Research Excellence Award and the 2024 Alberta Immigrant Impact Award. Her work has been featured in The New York Times and BBC News for innovations in dementia detection through driving analysis.
