Emma Farago serves as an Assistant Professor (Teaching) in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Calgary's Schulich School of Engineering, where she teaches core courses including BMEN 301 (Introduction to Biomedical Engineering), BMEN 468 (Problem-based Biomedical Engineering Design I), and ENGG 200 (Introduction to Engineering Design) for Fall 2024 and Winter 2025 terms.
Her educational background comprises:
- PhD in Electrical Engineering, Carleton University (2023)
- MESc in Electrical Engineering, Western University (2018)
- BASc in Electrical Engineering, University of Windsor (2016)
- BSc in Medical Sciences, Western University (2012)
Dr. Farago's research centers on transforming engineering education through equity-focused initiatives. She develops strategies to support underrepresented students while integrating real-world perspectives into curriculum design, with particular emphasis on creating inclusive biomedical engineering learning environments that address systemic barriers and amplify end-user voices in medical device development.
Her current projects include Innovating Care: An End-User Centered Curriculum for Biomedical Engineering, which collaborates with patients and healthcare professionals to reshape design education, and Investigating the tensions and harmonies between engineering student identity and queer identity, an interdisciplinary study examining 2SLGBTQ+ experiences in engineering culture.
Through student-supervised research and cross-sector partnerships with nurses, patient-engagement specialists, and diversity experts, she advances pedagogical innovations that bridge clinical needs with engineering education while fostering identity-affirming academic spaces.
