Savithri Nambeesan is an Associate Research Scientist in the Department of Horticulture at the University of Georgia's College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (CAES). Her work focuses on molecular and genomic approaches to understand fruit ripening, postharvest physiology, and the role of plant growth regulators like ethylene and abscisic acid. She splits her time between research (80%), teaching (15%), and service (5%).
- Education:
- Ph.D., Horticulture, Purdue University (2009)
- M.S., Immunology & Molecular Biology, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, India (2003)
- B.S., Life Sciences, St. Xavier's College, India (2000)
- Labs/Teams: Savithri Nambeesan Lab, CAES Vegetables Team, Integrated Plant Sciences
Her research integrates molecular techniques to improve postharvest shelf-life of fruits like blueberries and peppers. Key projects include studying phytonutrient levels during storage and identifying genetic factors influencing physiological disorders such as blossom end rot. She teaches HORT 4440 Environmental Physiology and its lab component. Collaborative work includes the Plant Center and transdisciplinary teams addressing crop resilience.
Publications highlight advancements in fruit physiology, hormone signaling, and agricultural biotechnology. Current efforts focus on developing strategies to enhance fruit quality through genetic and environmental interventions.
