Saul Ismael Utrera Barrios is a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (DTU), where he works within the Danish Polymer Centre. He holds a PhD in Advanced Chemistry from Complutense University of Madrid, an MSc in Plastics and Rubber from Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo, and a Materials Engineering degree from Universidad Simón Bolívar. His work contributes to sustainability and the application of Circular Economy principles in polymer science.
- PhD in Advanced Chemistry – Complutense University of Madrid (2020–2024)
- MSc in Plastics and Rubbers – Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo (2018–2019)
- Materials Engineering – Universidad Simón Bolívar (2011–2017)
His research focuses on the development and characterization of elastomeric materials, particularly silicone-based polymers such as polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). He investigates thermal transitions, mechanical performance, and sustainable formulations of rubber composites, with applications in soft robotics, automotive systems, and energy storage. His expertise spans polymer chemistry, material sustainability, and advanced characterization techniques.
The recent publication and conference presentations highlight a strong focus on correcting misconceptions in PDMS behavior, exploring ionic crosslinking in nitrile rubber composites, and developing silicone rubber-based batteries. These works reflect an interdisciplinary approach combining materials science, chemical engineering, and sustainable technology development.
Although no formal scientific awards are listed, his active participation in international conferences and peer-reviewed publications demonstrates recognition within the polymer research community. He is currently accepting PhD students, indicating mentorship and advisory roles.
- Conference Presentation: 'Stretch, release, and powered: silicone rubber-based batteries' (March 2025)
- Conference Presentation: 'Silicone Rubbers as Energy Storage' (March 2025)
- Conference Presentation: 'A comparative analysis of ionically crosslinked XNBR composites reinforced with conventional and eco-friendly fillers' (June 2024)
Saul is involved in collaborative research projects, particularly with senior scientists like Prof. Anne Ladegaard Skov, and contributes to both fundamental and applied polymer research. His work bridges academic inquiry with industrial relevance, especially in sustainable elastomer development.
