Kamal K. Kar

Kamal K. Kar is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. His research spans multiple areas of advanced materials with applications in energy storage, water purification, and biomedical engineering.

Dr. Kar earned his PhD from IIT Kharagpur in 1999 with a thesis titled "Medium and high strain hysteresis loss behavior of filled natural rubber and styrene butadiene rubber vulcanizates."

Dr. Kar's research focuses on nanomaterials and advanced composites, particularly carbon-based nanomaterials like carbon nanotubes, graphene, porous carbon, and exfoliated graphite. His work encompasses nanostructured materials, multifunctional composites, and carbon-carbon/silicon composites. He investigates materials processing and characterization techniques, with applications spanning supercapacitors, fuel cells, lithium batteries, water purification systems, high-performance structural composites, and bioimplants. His expertise also extends to finite element analysis of polymeric products and specialized applications like the roadwheel of Military Battle Tank Arjuna.

Dr. Kar's publication record demonstrates a strong focus on nanocomposites and biomaterials, with significant contributions to carbon-based nanomaterials, polymer nanocomposites for biomedical applications, and thermal analysis of polymers. His work bridges fundamental materials science with practical applications in energy, environment, and healthcare sectors.

He also serves as a tutor for courses on manufacturing processes, thermodynamics, and nature and properties of materials, and instructs laboratory courses in Mechanical Engineering.

Dr. Kar is based at the Advanced Centre for Material Science (ACMS) at IIT Kanpur, where he conducts research in nanomaterials and advanced composites.
