Prof. Dr. Sascha Weggen is a Molecular Neuropathology Group Leader at the Institute of Neuropathology, Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, focusing on Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathogenesis. His research investigates amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptides, γ-secretase modulators (GSMs), and ADAMTS proteases as genetic risk factors for sporadic AD.
- Education: Dr. rer. nat. (Molecular Biology, University of Bonn), undergraduate biology training (RWTH Aachen, University of Bonn).
- Research Focus: Molecular mechanisms of AD, including Aβ42 aggregation prevention, ADAMTS4 cleavage of APP, PSEN mutations in familial AD, and progranulin’s role in frontotemporal dementia.
- Laboratory Techniques: Gene editing, stem cell cultivation, murine models, synthetic chemistry collaborations, and chemical biology experiments.
- Publications: 10+ peer-reviewed articles (2001–2019) on Aβ modulation, enzyme activity, and AD pathophysiology.
- Team: Includes PhD student Carolina Münch, lab manager Sandra Lehmann, technician Katharina Vogel, and postdoc Vidya Sagar Kesireddy.
