Sarki A. Abdulkadir is a Professor of Urology and Pathology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, where he serves as Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Urology and holds the John T. Grayhack Professorship of Urological Research. He is affiliated with multiple institutes, including the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Simpson Querrey Institute for Epigenetics.
- MD: Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria (1990)
- PhD: Johns Hopkins University (1995)
- Postgraduate Training: Barnes Jewish Hospital (1999-2000) and Washington University (2000)
Dr. Abdulkadir's research focuses on molecular mechanisms driving cancer initiation, progression, and recurrence, particularly in prostate cancer. His work integrates genomics, gene regulation, and oncogenic kinases as therapeutic targets, with recent emphasis on
- MYC inhibition in neuroendocrine malignancies
- Mitochondrial metabolism vulnerabilities
- Twist1's role in cancer senescence
- PIM kinase targeting in therapy-resistant prostate cancer
The 2025 articles highlight his leadership in identifying novel therapeutic strategies through targeted gene regulation, metabolic vulnerabilities, and epigenetic modulation. His work bridges basic science with clinical translation, exemplified by ongoing preclinical and clinical development of therapeutic agents.
Scientific Recognition
- Tripartite Legacy Prize (2020)
- Illinois Science and Technology Coalition Researcher To Know (2020)
- Diversity Lecturer Award (2019)
- Elected Member, American Society for Clinical Investigation (2017)
As a principal investigator, he leads NIH-funded projects (2 R01s, 1 P50 SPORE grant) and mentors trainees in multidisciplinary cancer research. His lab at the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center investigates
- cellular origins of prostate cancer
- gene cooperation in tumorigenesis
- epigenetic regulators like DOT1L
