Sari Hannila is an Associate Professor in the Department of Human Anatomy and Cell Science at the University of Manitoba’s Max Rady College of Medicine. She serves as Deputy Director of the Interdisciplinary Health Program and Neuroanatomy Section Head. Her research focuses on the role of secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI) in neurodegenerative diseases, spinal cord injury, and neural development. She has held postdoctoral positions at Hunter College (NYC) and Queen’s University (Canada).

Dr. Hannila is a distinguished educator with eight teaching awards from the Manitoba Medical Students’ Association. She directed outreach for the Manitoba Neuroscience Network (2014–2023) and was nominated for CBC Manitoba’s Future 40 (2017). Her research is funded by NSERC, the Canadian Paraplegic Association, and Wings for Life (Austria).
Publications appear in Neuroscientist, Experimental Neurology, Journal of Biological Chemistry, and Journal of Neuroscience. She teaches neuroanatomy across health programs and leads lab investigations into SLPI’s role in gene expression and brain injury recovery.
