Sarah Wiesendanger is a Research Associate and PhD candidate at the University of Basel, affiliated with both the eikones – Center for the Theory and History of the Image and the Department of Art History within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Her work bridges theoretical inquiry with practical curatorial experience in contemporary art.
Her academic background includes:
- Bachelor's degree in Photography from Zurich University of the Arts
- Master's degree in Art History and Image Theory from the University of Basel (completed February 2020) with thesis on American artist Andrea Zittel
Wiesendanger's research critically examines the sculptural works of German artist Charlotte Posenenske (1930-1985), particularly focusing on the changeable Series D, DW, and E created in 1967/68. While these mass-produced works have traditionally been interpreted as democratic sites of collective action, her dissertation challenges this reading through close visual analysis, examination of related ephemera, and theoretical contextualization. Her work aims to anchor Posenenske's oeuvre more firmly within its specific cultural and historical moment rather than viewing it through contemporary political frameworks.
Prior to her doctoral studies, Wiesendanger gained professional experience as an assistant curator at the Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart, where she contributed to exhibitions including the early work of Isa Genzken. Since mid-2021, she has served as assistant at the Schaulager Professorship for Art Theory, strengthening her expertise in contemporary art practices. As a member of the eikones research center, she participates in interdisciplinary dialogue about the theory and history of images within Basel's rich museum landscape.
