Kumler's research spans the art, material culture, and architecture of the European Middle Ages with particular focus on medieval image theory and aesthetics. Her work examines illuminated manuscripts, codicology, and the interplay between visual culture and textual traditions. She investigates how material conditions shape human thought, imagination, and behavior, with special attention to liturgical objects, ritual practices, and theological concepts during the High and Late Middle Ages. A significant strand of her research explores how images and artifacts influenced historical conceptions of property, value, originality, and authenticity.
Her recent publications reveal a trajectory connecting medieval visual culture with contemporary theoretical frameworks, demonstrating methodological innovation through interdisciplinary approaches that bridge historical analysis with modern art theory. The works consistently engage with materiality, perception, and the philosophical dimensions of visual representation across temporal boundaries.
- Fellowship of Freiwillige Akademische Gesellschaft Basel — NFS Bildkritik/eikones
- Fellow at Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin (2014/2015)
Kumler actively mentors students and collaborates through the Basel Renaissance Colloquium, which she co-organizes with the Department of History. Her leadership extends to the eikones research center and participation in the Bilderfahrzeuge international research partnership, demonstrating substantial grant acquisition and collaborative research management capabilities. She maintains active supervision of student researchers including Jolanda Frische and Wanja Gerber.
As head of the eikones Center for the Theory and History of the Image, Kumler oversees a significant interdisciplinary research hub that coordinates and promotes image-related research across faculties. The center participates in international collaborations including the Bilderfahrzeuge partnership spanning institutions in Basel, Berlin, Florence, Hamburg, London, and Paris, focusing on the migration of images, objects, and ideas across time and space.
