Sarah Van der Laan is an Associate Professor at the University of Kansas, Department of English. Her academic work bridges the European epic tradition and Renaissance culture, exploring literature's role in shaping ethical frameworks for human experience.

Her research investigates epic as a dialogic space for examining heroism, gender norms, and community values across historical and cultural boundaries. Current projects analyze female heroism through comparative studies of classical and Renaissance lyric, epic, and musical traditions.
Sarah's publications span Homeric ethics in Renaissance opera, Ovidian lament in women's intellectual history, and Camões's Odyssean structures. Her book on Homeric ethics in Renaissance epic and opera was published by Oxford University Press in 2024.
