Sarah Teakel is a Lecturer in Animal Anatomy and Physiology at the School of Agricultural, Environmental and Veterinary Sciences, Charles Sturt University. She holds a PhD in Cell Biology and Protein Biochemistry and integrates clinical expertise with academic teaching. Her work focuses on both biomedical research and educational innovation, particularly in student retention and inclusive pedagogy.
- BMedSc (Hons 1)
- PhD in Cell Biology and Protein Biochemistry, Charles Sturt University (2021)
- Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (GCLTHE)
Sarah's research spans two major areas: medical science, including pancreatic cancer tumourigenesis and Acot7 protein fibril formation, and scholarship of teaching and learning, with emphasis on universal design for learning (UDL), transition pedagogy, and student success for underrepresented cohorts. She promotes a pedagogy of kindness and evidence-based inclusive practices.
Her recent publications reveal a strong trend toward educational research, particularly in first-year student experience, nudge theory in higher education, open educational resources, and support for part-time and disabled students. While earlier works focused on cancer biology, her recent scholarship centers on equity, inclusion, and systemic interventions to reduce attrition.
Her scientific awards include:
- ASCILITE Innovation Award (2022)
- Australian Award for University Teaching Program (2022)
- Finalist, Australian Financial Review Educational Awards (2023, Equity and Inclusion)
Sarah has led and contributed to nationally recognized student support programs that embed discipline-specific tutors in first-year courses. These initiatives have demonstrably improved student engagement and retention, particularly for equity groups. She has secured recognition and funding through competitive awards and collaborative research. She actively participates in academic conferences and professional development activities, such as the CRYSTAL 33 Workshop in 2021.
Sarah contributes to a vibrant research network at Charles Sturt University, collaborating with colleagues like Dr. Natalie van der Ploeg and Dr. Katrina Linden. Her work is supported by institutional research infrastructure and external recognition, positioning her as a key contributor to both biomedical science and educational innovation.
