Dr. Sarah Rebecca Strömel is an Academic Councillor (akademische Rätin a.Z.) at the Chair of Political Philosophy, Theory, and History of Ideas at the University of Regensburg. She specializes in Alexis de Tocqueville’s work, democracy theory, racism, and intersectionality. Her research explores democratic theoretical perspectives on freedom of expression and debate culture in the digital public sphere, as well as Tocqueville’s analysis of individualism and its implications for modern democracy.
Education: She earned a B.A. (2016) and M.Sc. in Democracy Studies (2018, summa cum laude) from the University of Regensburg. Her 2023 dissertation, Tocqueville und der Individualismus in der Demokratie, was awarded summa cum laude. She also holds a Certificate of Higher Education Teaching (2022).
Research Interests: Tocqueville studies, democracy theory, debate regulation strategies, racism and intersectionality, populism in Brazil and Germany, and the role of emotions in politics. She co-leads the Bavarian Promotionskolleg Political Theory and is on the editorial board of Political Thought and praefaktisch (philosophy blog). She organizes international conferences on democracy, debate culture, and Rawlsian theory.
Awards: Recognized for her teaching project Klasse - Rasse - Masse in the DVPW’s 'Herausragende Lehre' series (2021), and selected for the Mentoring.UR program for early-career researchers.
Teaching: She teaches courses on political philosophy, democratic theory, and critical issues in race and gender. Recent courses include 'Tocqueville and the Future of Democracy' (2025) and 'Race and Gender in Political Theory.'
Publications: Over 20 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, including monographs and edited volumes on Tocqueville, democracy, and intersectionality. She is co-editing the Handbook of Political Thought for Suhrkamp (2026).
