Gianina Englert is an Associate Professor of Humanities at the Hamilton Center for Classical and Civic Education, University of Florida. She holds a Ph.D. in Government from Georgetown University and an M.A. in Liberal Arts from St. John's College Annapolis. Previously, she was an Assistant Professor at Southern Methodist University and a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Brown University.
Her research focuses on the history of liberalism (French and Anglo-American), democracy, citizenship, and the social question. Key areas include French liberals' responses to democratic equality, Tocqueville's legacy, and the intersections of political economy and civic identity. Her book Democracy Tamed: French Liberalism and the Politics of Suffrage (Oxford UP, 2024) examines how French liberals navigated democratic reforms. Current projects include a monograph on Tocqueville's reception by Left-wing thinkers and articles on European liberals' responses to socioeconomic challenges.
Englert’s work appears in top journals like American Journal of Political Science, History of Political Thought, and Modern Intellectual History. Her research bridges historical analysis and contemporary political debates, emphasizing liberal thought’s evolving engagement with democracy and social justice.
She has contributed reviews and symposiums on major works in political theory, including analyses of Raymond Aron and Dan Kapust’s scholarship. Her interdisciplinary approach integrates intellectual history, political philosophy, and transatlantic comparisons.
