João Carlos Espada is a Full Professor at the Institute for Political Studies (IEP), Catholic University of Portugal, where he is also a co-founder (1996) and active researcher at the Research Centre of the Institute for Political Studies (CIEP). He holds a D.Phil in Political Studies from the University of Oxford and has held academic positions at Brown, Stanford, and Georgetown Universities, as well as the European Parliament/Bronislaw Geremek Chair at the College of Europe in Warsaw. He is a leading figure in political theory, with a focus on liberty, democracy, and the Anglo-American tradition.
His research interests include Political Theory, Liberal Democracy, Churchill Studies, and the History of Political Thought. His work consistently explores the philosophical foundations of liberty and the institutional mechanisms that sustain open societies. He is the editor of the quarterly journal Nova Cidadania and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Democracy, reinforcing his influence in democratic theory and discourse.
His recent publications reflect a deep engagement with classical liberal thinkers such as Hayek and Raymond Plant, the legacy of major historical revolutions, and contemporary challenges to democracy. His scholarly output remains highly active, with research extending into 2025, particularly through the project The Six Revolutions of the Modern Era.

João Carlos Espada has advised two Presidents of the Portuguese Republic—Mário Soares and Aníbal Cavaco Silva—and is a regular political commentator with a weekly column in Observador. He leads and participates in major research projects at CIEP and organizes high-profile academic events such as the Atlantic Conferences. He is a member of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon, the Marine Academy, and the International Academy of Portuguese Culture, underscoring his national and international scholarly recognition.
He is actively involved in mentoring, editorial leadership, and public intellectual life, contributing to both academic and public debates on democracy, liberty, and European civilisation.
