Sarah Raskin, Ph.D., MPH is an Associate Professor in the Urban and Regional Studies and Planning Program at Virginia Commonwealth University’s L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs. She holds a courtesy faculty appointment in the VCU School of Dentistry’s Department of Dental Public Health and Policy, and is a core member of the iCubed Oral Health Equity initiative. Her research focuses on structural inequities in oral health systems, particularly dental safety net policy, workforce diversity, and the historical impacts of racism in dentistry. She employs mixed methods and community-engaged approaches to address political and moral dimensions of healthcare delivery.
Dr. Raskin’s academic training bridges medical anthropology, health services research, and public health. Notable achievements include the 2023 Wilder School Excellence in Service Award, 2020 Excellence in Mentoring Award, and the 2015 Society for Medical Anthropology’s Virchow Award. She serves as co-President-elect of the Association for the Anthropology of Policy and collaborates with the Virginia Health Catalyst on public oral health policy.
Her teaching emphasizes community health advocacy, qualitative research methods, and public health emergency preparedness. Recent work includes studies on teledentistry implementation during the pandemic, racialized oral health inequities, and strategies to recruit underrepresented minorities into dental professions.
Research funding sources include the National Science Foundation, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and VCU’s Wright Center. She has published in major dental journals and authored chapters on dental humanitarianism and the cultural politics of oral healthcare.
