Sarah Powell is a Clinical Professor at Duke University School of Law, with prior experience as a litigator and senior associate at Covington & Burling LLP in Washington, D.C. Her practice focused on complex civil litigation and white-collar criminal defense before transitioning to academia.
She is deeply engaged in legal education for practice, emphasizing lawyer professionalism and practical training. Her recent publications include insights into Biglaw practice and legal education trends.
Powell maintains an active pro bono practice, representing criminal defendants, asylum seekers, and low-income clients. She has served on the Criminal Justice Act Appellate Panel and worked with the Neighborhood Legal Services Program.
Her academic credentials include a J.D. from Duke Law, where she was a Note Editor for the Duke Law Journal, and a Master’s of Music from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Prior to law school, she pursued a career as an opera singer.
