Dr Sarah Miles is an Associate Professor in the Department of Classics and Ancient History at Durham University. She specializes in Greek comedy, tragedy, and paratragedy from the 5th–3rd centuries BCE, alongside the reception of ancient Greek literature in 20th/21st-century popular culture, particularly children’s media and animation.
Education: She studied Classics at the University of Oxford and completed postgraduate work at the University of Nottingham, earning a Ph.D. Her thesis, Strattis, Tragedy, and Comedy, is available online.
Research Interests
- Analysis of paratragedy in Old Comedy fragments, focusing on its role in popularizing Greek drama.
- Classical reception of Greek drama in 4th-century BCE philosophy, especially through Plato’s engagement with comedy.
- Modern adaptations of Greek literature in children’s animation (e.g., Ulysses 31) and contemporary pop culture.
- Editing and analysis of fragmentary ancient texts, including her ongoing monograph on The Fragments of Old Comedy.
Key Projects
- Co-organizer of the Plato on Comedy Project (2018–2019), resulting in an edited volume with Cambridge University Press, co-led with scholars like Prof. Andrea Capra and Dr. Anthony Hooper.
