Prof Sarah Maltby is a Professor of Media & Communication at the University of Sussex, affiliated with the School of Media, Arts and Humanities. Her research focuses on the intersection of media, memory, and identity in conflict contexts, particularly exploring post-war peace processes in Sierra Leone through her 'Salone Pis' project. She previously held a Lecturer position at City University before joining Sussex in 2013.
Her academic interests include representations of war/peace in media, military-media relationships, and digital media's role in security. Notable works include Remembering the Falklands War (2016), co-editing Spaces of War, War of Spaces (2020), and founding the War and Media Network. She co-edits the Media, War and Conflict journal and led the DUN Project (2013–2016) on social media in strategic communications.
Recent research emphasizes media’s role in post-war reconciliation, military social media dynamics, and mediatized conflict analysis. Her work bridges arts, humanities, and social sciences, fostering dialogue between academics and practitioners.
