Professor Sarah Madeleine Thompson, MBE, is affiliated with the University of York as a Professor in the School of Physics, Engineering and Technology. She has held significant leadership roles including Head of Physics (2011-2017), Associate Dean Research (2019-2022), and Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor Research (2022–present). Her research focuses on advanced magnetic materials and thermal transport at the nanoscale.
- BSc, PhD from Durham University
Research Interests center on magnetic thin films/multilayers, spintronics, and nanoscale thermal transport. Her work combines theoretical exploration of quantum effects with experimental development of scanning thermal microscopy (SThM) techniques to quantify heat flow at nanometer resolutions.
Recent Publications highlight her contributions to phononic resonators, iron oxide thin film characterization, and SThM method standardization. These reflect her dual focus on fundamental physics and applied materials engineering.
- Scientific Awards: EPSRC Advanced Fellowship, British Association Kelvin Lecturer, Institute of Physics Award, MBE
Teaching includes modules on thermal physics, solid state physics, and magnetism, alongside supervising undergraduate projects in thermal atomic force microscopy. She also delivers outreach lectures on topics like spintronics and infrared imaging.
External Roles include Vice President of the Institute of Physics (2015-2019) and membership in the European School of Magnetism's Scientific Advisory Committee (2018–2024). She has led industrial collaborations with organizations such as Cogent Power.
