Sarah Louise Martin-Denham is an Associate Professor of Care and Education at the University of Sunderland. She is an author for SAGE and Routledge, focusing on research addressing school exclusion, childhood adversities, and service evaluations in children’s social care. Her work emphasizes the importance of child and caregiver agency in educational and care decisions, informed by her experiences as a mother, teacher, and neurodiverse individual.
She holds leadership roles including Chair of the independent SENCO Network, Convener of the Interdisciplinary Research Network on Adverse Childhood Experiences, and Co-Chair of the National Working Group: Safeguarding Disabled Children. She also serves as Second Supervisor for PhD and Professional Doctorate students.
Her research prioritizes evidence-based practices to support children with special needs and disabilities, advocating for holistic outcomes through teacher and professional training. She co-created the #pullupachair films with children and families, and her work has been highlighted in media including articles on school exclusion policies and support networks for struggling families.
