Dr Jonathan Reid is a Senior Lecturer in Child Development, Special Educational Needs/Disabilities (SEND), and Inclusion at Oxford Brookes University's School of Education, Humanities and Languages. He leads the MA Education: SEND program and teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate courses. His research focuses on trauma-informed education, neurodiversity, and compassionate pedagogy. He currently serves as Director of the Centre for Recovery from Childhood Trauma and Recovery from Childhood Trauma Special Interest Group Convener, alongside roles in the Children and Young People Network and the Social, Emotional, and Behavioural Difficulties Association.
Reid holds advanced qualifications including PGCE, PGDES, PCTHE, and MSc from Oxford University. His professional memberships span organizations like the Royal Society of Arts, the Higher Education Academy (Senior Fellow), and the Institute of Recovery from Childhood Trauma (Trustee/Vice Chair). He has presented widely on topics such as teacher emotional work, trauma-informed approaches, and compassion-focused education at national conferences and parliamentary briefings.
His research interests emphasize fostering inclusive educational environments through compassion-centered frameworks, addressing adversity and trauma's impact on learners, and supporting neurodiverse populations. He advises on national education policy through consultancies with the Department for Education and Houses of Parliament, contributing to initiatives like the SEND Reflection Framework and Social Care Review events.
Reid supervises doctoral research on inclusion/exclusion dynamics, diversity, and trauma recovery. He leads interdisciplinary initiatives like the Recovery from Childhood Trauma SIG and collaborates with institutions such as the National Network for the Education of Care Leavers to design whole-community support systems for vulnerable youth.
