Sarah Leavitt is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Creative Writing at the University of British Columbia's Faculty of Arts. She has been teaching since 2012, specializing in developing comics courses that emphasize both creation and pedagogical strategies. Her research focuses on autobiographical comics, formal experimentation, and how comics education influences other writing forms.
Leavitt's published works include Tangles: A Story About Alzheimer’s, My Mother, and Me (2010) and Agnes, Murderess (2019). Her current project is a collection of experimental comics exploring grief following her partner's death in 2020.
Her teaching philosophy integrates visual and textual storytelling, emphasizing creative innovation. She has contributed significantly to UBC's Creative Writing curriculum, particularly in expanding graphic narrative offerings.
