Marcella Polain is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Arts and Humanities, Edith Cowan University. She holds a PhD from The University of Western Australia and has qualifications in Education and English from Curtin University. Her research spans creative writing, colonialism studies, and cultural trauma, with a focus on interdisciplinary collaboration, memory, and literary arts. Notable works include Driving into the Sun (2019) and contributions to Continuum (2024) and Journal of Graphic Novels and Comics (2022). She has supervised over 30 PhD and Master’s students in creative writing and related fields. Polain has secured grants including the ECU Early Career Researcher Grant (2012–2014) and ECU Industry Collaboration Grant (2008–2013). Her creative outputs include poetry, novels, and multimedia projects exploring themes like identity, postcolonialism, and cultural memory.
Research interests include the intersection of art and memory, particularly in works addressing historical trauma such as the Armenian Genocide and the May ’98 riots in Indonesia. She also investigates the lived experiences of individuals with Alzheimer’s and the role of bilingualism in memory recovery. Polain’s creative works often blend experimental narrative forms with interdisciplinary methodologies, as seen in her multimedia exhibitions and collaborative projects like Contested Spaces (2021).
Her supervision focuses on creative practice research, guiding students in novel-writing, poetry, and interdisciplinary projects. Grants supported projects like ‘The stubborn murmur’: The Armenian Genocide in artistic decision and ‘Deep Within My Soul’: Recovering Memory in Bilingual Early Alzheimer's Patients. Polain’s work bridges creative arts and academic scholarship, contributing to both literary production and cultural analysis.
