Professor Sarah König serves as Head of the Institute for Medical Education and Training Research at University Hospital Würzburg, Julius-Maximilians-University Würzburg, and has been Dean of Studies for the Faculty of Medicine since 2019. She holds a W3 professorship in medical education awarded in 2016 and also serves as Head of the Study Commission and Strategy Commission for Curriculum Development in Human Medicine. Her leadership extends to the Presidential Commission for Quality in Studies and Teaching at the university and the Teaching Committee of the Medical Faculty Association.
Her research interests center on technology-enhanced medical education with particular focus on virtual reality applications, competency assessment methodologies, and interprofessional communication. She investigates how digital teaching formats can improve learning outcomes and how to effectively measure competency development in medical students and residents. Her work bridges clinical expertise with educational innovation, drawing on her background as a Specialist in Surgery and Specialist in Visceral Surgery.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on virtual reality applications across medical education domains including surgical training, emergency medicine, and specialized fields like otorhinolaryngology and radiology. Her research consistently examines how technology impacts knowledge acquisition, skill development, and stress responses in medical learners. She also investigates broader educational themes including planetary health education, career choice determinants among medical students, and faculty development initiatives.
Professor König serves on numerous prestigious committees including the Scientific Advisory Board of the Medical University of Vienna and the jury for the Ars legendi Prize of the Medical Faculty Day. She reviews for leading journals including PLOS ONE, BMC Medical Education, and Journal of Surgical Education, and participates in accreditation activities through AQAS and ACQUIN.
She actively mentors young academics and conducts workshops for clinical educators across German universities. Her additional activities include serving as Vice-Chairwoman of the Surgical Teaching Working Group, participating in the 'Round Table Medicine/Health Sciences' of the German Rectors' Conference, and contributing to the development of national medical education standards.
