Dieter Hahnloser is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Biology and Medicine of the University of Lausanne (UNIL) and an Assistant Physician in the Department of Visceral Surgery at Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV), appointed on January 1, 2012. He is a specialist in colorectal surgery and proctology, with extensive clinical and academic experience.
- Born in 1969 in Winterthur, Switzerland
- Studied medicine at the Universities of Fribourg and Zurich
- Graduated in 1994, obtained doctorate in 1995
- Completed surgical training with FMH certifications in general surgery (2001) and visceral surgery (2007)
- Trained at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA (2003), earning EBSQ in colorectal surgery and proctology
- Private lecturer at Zurich Medical Faculty (2007)
- Research supported by Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)
His research and clinical interests focus on colorectal surgery, proctology, minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques, and the development of standardized clinical pathways. He aims to enhance surgical safety and efficiency, particularly in treating rectal cancer and inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. He has pioneered the use of virtual simulators in surgical training and continues to innovate in surgical education at CHUV.
As a member of the working group introducing robotic surgery at CHUV, he is actively expanding its application in complex colorectal procedures. He also focuses on improving outpatient proctological care pathways.
He has led the "colon, rectum and proctology" team since 2006 and has organized annual proctology courses and biannual advanced laparoscopic colorectal surgery courses. His contributions span clinical innovation, education, and research in visceral surgery.
