Sarah Hughes is an Assistant Professor in Human Geography at Northumbria University, specializing in political geographies of resistance, forced migration, and knowledge production. She previously held a Vice Chancellor’s Research Fellowship (2019–2022) and ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship (2018–2019) at Durham University.
Her research focuses on three core areas: (1) Reconceptualizing resistance beyond predetermined forms, (2) Lived experiences of asylum governance and refugee integration, and (3) Epistemological challenges in academia. Notable projects include the British Academy-funded Bridging The Gap study on refugees’ post-status trajectories and collaborative work on Countermapping Detention to preserve immigration enforcement archives.
Teaching responsibilities include modules on political geographies, sustainable development, and research methods. She currently serves as treasurer of the Royal Geographical Society’s Gender and Feminist Research Group.
