Sarah Hernandez is an Assistant Professor of Native American Literature and Director of the Institute for American Indian Research (IFAIR) at the University of New Mexico. She also serves as the literature and legacy officer for the Oak Lake Writers Society, an Oceti Sakowin-led nonprofit. Under her leadership, the Society launched the #NativeReads campaign to promote Indigenous literature and raise awareness of the Oceti Sakowin literary tradition.
Her research focuses on Dakota, Nakota, and Lakota women’s roles as cultural keepers and bearers, emphasizing themes of land, gender, and decolonization. Her forthcoming book, We Are the Stars: Colonizing and Decolonizing the Oceti Sakowin Literary Tradition (2023), explores intersections of settler colonialism, nationalism, and Indigenous literary traditions.
Her scholarly work has appeared in Wicazo Sa Review, Studies in American Indian Literature, English Language Notes, and Great Plains Quarterly. She actively advocates for Indigenous knowledge systems through community-driven initiatives and academic scholarship.
