Sarah Hawkes is a Professor & Head of Public Health at the Malaysia Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Monash University. She also holds an Honorary Professorship in Global Public Health at University College London (UCL) and serves as co-CEO of Global Health 50/50, an organization advancing gender equality in global health. Her work bridges research and advocacy, focusing on social and health policy for equity and fairness.
With a multidisciplinary background in sociology, medicine, and epidemiology, her research interests include gender equality, health equity, and the intersection of power and politics in global health. She co-founded GH5050 and co-chairs the Lancet Commission on Gender and Global Health.
Her recent work emphasizes inclusive gender approaches in global health policy, as highlighted in a 2019 Lancet Series. She has collaborated with governments, UN agencies, and civil society across South and East Asia for over 30 years.
