Sarah Harcum, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at Clemson University, where she directs the Cell Culture and Fermentation Optimization Laboratory. She holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Maryland (1993), an M.S. from Colorado State University, and a B.S.E. in Bioengineering from the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on bioprocess optimization, recombinant protein expression, and mammalian cell culture systems.
Her primary research interests include bioreactor control strategies, gene expression dynamics in industrial microorganisms, CHO cell bioprocessing for biopharmaceuticals, stem cell expansion technologies, and bioethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass. She leads major initiatives including a $6M NSF EPSCoR-funded project (CHO g2p) focusing on Chinese hamster ovary cell genomics-phenomics relationships and co-directs the NSF I/UCRC Advanced Mammalian Biomanufacturing Innovation Center (AMBIC).
Research publications demonstrate consistent focus on bioprocess optimization across microbial and mammalian systems, with recent emphasis on transcriptomic analysis of CHO cells, metabolic engineering for biofuels, and innovative bioreactor control strategies. Earlier work established foundations in E. coli stress responses and protein expression.

Laboratories & Teams: Directs the Cell Culture and Fermentation Optimization Lab in Clemson's Biosystems Research Complex. Leads multi-institutional teams including the CHO g2p consortium (Clemson, Delaware, Tulane, Delaware State) and AMBIC (with Johns Hopkins, Delaware, UMass-Lowell).
