Sarah Gutzmann is a PhD Candidate and researcher in the School of Resource & Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University. She holds a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science and an MRM from SFU, and is a Biologist in Training with the BC College of Applied Biologists. Her research focuses on social-ecological systems, blending coastal ecology, conservation biology, and Indigenous governance principles to address environmental sustainability and social equity.

Her work emphasizes community-engaged research, including collaborations with the Gwich’in Renewable Resources Board and the Kwakiutl Nation. She developed a decision space framework for reconciliatory kelp harvest and farming practices guided by Indigenous governance. Current PhD research explores regenerative kelp harvesting and restoration with communities, regulators, and industries.
Her articles highlight themes in Indigenous governance, fisheries monitoring, and salmon physiology. She has completed fellowships in policy knowledge mobilization and community-engaged research.
