John D. Reynolds is a Professor in Aquatic Ecology & Conservation at Simon Fraser University's Department of Biological Sciences, holding the Tom Buell BC Leadership Chair in Aquatic Conservation and serving as Chair of COSEWIC (Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada). His research focuses on salmon ecosystems, conservation biology, and biodiversity, emphasizing the ecological impacts of salmon on freshwater, marine, and terrestrial systems. He investigates salmon population dynamics, marine-derived nutrient cycles, and the effects of human activities on aquatic ecosystems.
Key research areas include the conservation of Pacific salmon, their role in ecosystem connectivity, and the influence of climate change on salmon populations. His work integrates remote sensing, stable isotope analysis, and policy analysis to address challenges in fisheries management and biodiversity preservation.
Recent publications highlight salmon's role in forest productivity, the impact of aquaculture on parasite dynamics, and strategies for prioritizing conservation actions in salmon habitats. Reynolds collaborates with Indigenous communities and organizations to develop sustainable conservation frameworks. His lab's projects emphasize holistic ecosystem management and the application of ecological benchmarks for policy decisions.
